5 Signs of Stress You Should Never Ignore

Stress sucks. There is no other way to put it. Some types of stress are more manageable than others and each person has their own threshold for what they can withstand.

When we experience stress, our brain springs into action by sending special hormones (adrenaline and cortisol) through our bodies. These hormones are designed to protect our bodies during times of stress and they dissipate once the stressor passes. However, if you are under constant pressure, the stress hormones continue to fire and the body remains in a heightened state of panic. It’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms of intense stress so you can intervene prior to reaching total burnout.

Below are five signs that indicate your body is approaching its maximum stress threshold:

  1. You are more forgetful lately and have trouble remembering information you just learned. This is because stress can tax your working memory capabilities (your short-term memory storage).

  2. You are not just tired, you are exhausted. Fatigue follows you everywhere and no matter how much you sleep, you are never refreshed.

  3. Your basic needs are no longer a priority. You used to eat healthy, work out, see friends and have a semblance of balance. Now you don’t even remember the last time you had energy for any of those things.

  4. You are suddenly disorganized. Everything seems scattered (your belongings, work, and attention) and you can’t seem to figure out how to reverse the chaos.

  5. You have increased your use of substances (tobacco, alcohol, etc.) to manage your anxiety.

The above signs are your body’s way of telling you to slow down. This is the ideal time to visit your primary care doctor for an evaluation. You don’t need to approach this on your own (you already have enough on your plate!). A therapist or psychiatrist can also help provide support and guidance.
